Maiya Coilton
Maiya Coilton, M.S., CCC-SLP, M.Ed., is a licensed speech-language pathologist and credentialed educator based in Washington, D.C. She holds a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Boston University and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of San Francisco along with a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Her clinical focus is on language-based disorders that impact a child’s ability to communicate, learn, and thrive academically. Maiya work with children with learning disabilities, developmental language disorders, autism, and ADHD, providing direct therapy, comprehensive evaluations, and individualized intervention targeting expressive and receptive language, literacy, and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). With a background in both general and special education, I bring an academic lens to language intervention. I also support students with oral language development, reading comprehension, written expression, and foundational literacy, drawing on evidence-based methods rooted in current research and advanced training. My mission is to help children build strong language foundations that support meaningful communication, confident learning, and long-term success in both academic and social settings.
My Approach To Speech Therapy
I believe therapy should be both effective and fun. At COIYA Speech & Language Therapy, I design interactive sessions that blend meaningful language learning with engaging, hands-on experiences. Sessions include multisensory activities that keep students motivated, regulated, and actively involved. Whether we’re practicing storytelling, responding to WH questions, building vocabulary, or using AAC, each session is intentionally structured to support real communication and academic growth. My approach combines structured language therapy with executive functioning strategies and foundational literacy support. I also provide reading intervention grounded in the science of reading, targeting phonological awareness, decoding, oral language, and comprehension to help students become more confident and capable.
What A Session Looks Like With Maiya
A familiar warm-up: We begin with a simple routine to help your child feel comfortable and ready to learn. This might include a greeting, sharing how they feel, or reviewing a quick concept using visuals, verbal prompts, or AAC. Targeted language activities: I guide your child through structured activities based on their goals. These might include building vocabulary, answering WH questions, forming sentences, improving listening skills, or retelling short stories. Books, visuals, or short videos are often used to support understanding. Hands-on, multisensory learning: To keep sessions engaging and age-appropriate, I incorporate crafts, cooking tasks, sensory materials, or movement-based games that reinforce language in fun, real-life ways. These experiences are adjusted to be developmentally appropriate whether your child is in kindergarten or fifth grade. AAC integration (if applicable): If your child uses a communication device, board, or picture system, we incorporate it naturally into all activities. I model how to use core words and structured phrases to support expressive language and independence. Review and wrap-up: We finish with a quick recap of what we practiced, highlighting key words, phrases, or strategies. I may send visuals, sentence stems, or prompts home so you can support carryover outside of therapy.
