About

Janice has been working as an SLP and Teacher of the Deaf (specializing in Cochlear Implants and Auditory Rehab) for the past 20 years. She has worked in all therapeutic settings: home, clinic, school, and hospital. She has a Masters in Speech in Hearing Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis as well as a Masters in Communication Disorders from LaSalle University in Philadelphia. Janice's professional expertise include teaching speech and spoken language to hearing-impaired and deaf children (infant to adult), auditory habilitation using cochlear implants, as well as teaching speech and language to children on the Autism Spectrum using ABA, PBIS, AAC, PECS, and a combination of verbal tonal and tactile/visual/auditory cues for articulation. In addition, she works with the Speech and Language Graduate Program at West Chester University as a Graduate Intern Supervisor.

My Approach To Speech Therapy

My approach to therapy is family focused. I believe that the family (parents, siblings, etc.) are an integral part of the therapy team. I work closely with the family to ensure that all concerns/questions are addressed and answered during therapy as well as provide therapy in the most optimal environment for the child. Young children do not perform their best seated at a table in a clinical setting. Families and I have participated in therapy sessions in the backyard, at the park, with their dogs as partners, etc. My therapy is based on what is developmentally appropriate and using materials preferred by the child. In addition, I respect and include all cultural values into therapy sessions. Most importantly, therapy consists of high energy activities to keep the child engaged and learning at the same time.

What A Session Looks Like With Me

Sessions include a variety of developmentally appropriate materials based on the interests of the family. Setting is based on the interests of the family. I enjoy when parents can participate to help parents generalize skills throughout the child's day. My therapy is based on personal experiences of having speech as a child. I could not say my R sounds. My speech therapist used index cards and had me say each word 10 times. If I made a mistake, he made me start over. It was so painfully boring. When I became a SLP, I made sure my therapy sessions were the exact opposite.

Fun Facts About Janice

Personally, I love to garden, enjoy my rescue Bull Terrier Sadie and my numerous birds, squirrels and rabbits that daily frequent my bird feeders.
